About the Internship
Thailand is open for quarantined arrivals, however, this program remains on hold for now in the best interests of the local community and volunteers alike.
This exciting program offers Medical Internships for those volunteers who are currently studying medicine in a number of notable private and public full-service hospitals in Chiang Mai. In all cases, volunteers/interns are able to work closely with a supervising physician, and are paired with a full-time doctor who they will shadow on daily rounds. Interns are only placed with doctors with an exceptional command of English. These are highly qualified professionals, many of whom have been educated in the US or UK. Intern responsibilities vary according to their own qualifications, experience and/or comfort level. Participants with a full medical degree will often enjoy far more access when it comes to administering care and interacting with patients, but it is important to note that most interns only observe or help out with very minor tasks. While every aspect of the internship is carefully monitored by the supervising staff, it is important to note that medical interns would never get this far ‘behind the scenes’ in a Western hospital, so it really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for medical students.
Goals of this Project:
- Provide essential medical care to the people of Thailand
- Improve the health and wellbeing of some of the poorest people in the world
- Enable international volunteers to spend time working with those who need it most
- Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike.
How You Can Help
Volunteers play an essential role in providing medical care in Thailand. Depending on current needs at the hospital in which volunteers are placed, interns may be able to choose the department they work in and in most cases it is possible to spend supplemental time in a second department as well. Some of the areas medical interns can work in include; Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Biochemistry, Family Medicine, Orthopedics, Pharmacology, Emergency Room, Paediatrics, Nursing, Anatomy, Dental, Rehabilitation, Surgery, Physical Therapy. There is also the opportunity to spend a week at a rural hospital, each day interning in a different department.
The basic project calls for interns to work from 8am – 4pm, Monday – Friday. Depending upon the working schedule of the paired doctor and area of the hospital an intern is placed, the times and days of work may fluctuate. As with all Medical placements, patience and flexibility with work schedules is greatly appreciated.
Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways on this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:
- Provide essential medical care to locals, dependent on volunteers qualifications, skills and experience
- Undertake routine hospital tasks as required
- Work on health and education campaigns
