The Childcare Program
Grenada has pandemic restrictions in place that mean this program can't get the assistance it needs right now.
Want to visit paradise while completing amazing work helping disadvantaged children? Then sign up to this amazing Love Volunteer’s program today, set in magical Grenada in the Caribbean! The mission of this program is to care for at-risk and impoverished children of this beautiful island. Many children in the Caribbean face various challenges, including abandonment, neglect, abuse, trafficking and general lack of care. The organizations that work to address these issues need extra support staff to carry out their daily activities – and that’s where our volunteers come in. Volunteers could be working with these wonderful children in child care facilities, homes for persons with disabilities or even working alongside government agencies. These projects are severely understaffed and underfunded, which is why they are in urgent need of volunteers. For volunteers who truly want to make a difference to the lives of disadvantaged children, this program serves to protect and care for those who need it most.
Goals of this Project:
- Provide essential childcare to the vulnerable children of Grenada
- Improve the future prospects of children in Grenada
- Give impoverished children quality care, compassion and a sense of hope
- Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike
How You Can Help
Volunteers play an essential role in helping disadvantaged children through this program. Participants will assist with the children’s well-being by helping to assess their development levels with simple evaluation tools. This information is then used to develop programs designed to improve their abilities and stimulate their sensory, cognitive and motor skills through dance, music, art and craft, games and role play. Volunteers will help with basic education and interactive activities that promote growth and development and will provide general day to day care (bathing, feeding, laundry, cleaning), ensuring that children practice proper hygiene and sanitation. Volunteers could also be involved in monthly outreach activities providing services and support to children in need. This is a wonderful program for volunteers with a compassionate nature and a willingness to assist children in need. International volunteers make a huge difference to the lives of these vulnerable children and are truly appreciated.
Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways on this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:
- Help to care for the children
- Attend to and interact with the children
- Assess the children’s developmental needs
- Create activities and entertain the children with games and songs, etc.
Requirements
Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to assist in the development of Jamaica's next generation. While this highly rewarding project does not require participants to have a background in the field of childcare, as there are many ways you can assist, volunteers with suitable education, qualifications or experience are highly sought after. Regardless, a volunteer’s individual role can often be tailored to suit their particular skills and interests. Ideally, volunteers on this project will have at least a basic knowledge of the local language in order to communicate effectively with staff and students, though this is not a pre-requisite. All applicants must of course display a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!
Additionally, volunteers applying to join this program will be required to supply to following documentation:
- Emergency contact
- Police check
Project Location
As with all of our Grenada volunteer programs, volunteers on this project will be based in the idyllic city St Georges – Grenada’s historic capital. The town is surrounded by a hillside created from an old volcano crater which has eroded to become what is now a protected and picturesque horseshoe-shaped harbor.
In the town center, the 18th-century Fort George offers panoramic views of the island and St. George’s Bay. Nearby, Fort Matthew was formerly a battleground and, later, an asylum, and hides beneath is a twisted maze of underground tunnels. The Grenada National Museum hosts exhibits about the history of the region, including the plantation economy and the whaling industry.
St. George's is a popular Caribbean tourist destination and the town has developed in recent years, while preserving its history, culture, and natural environment. This is a truly unique place to volunteer!
Start Dates & Duration
This project is available year-round and programs start every SUNDAY. Volunteers can choose to participate for periods ranging from 2 weeks to 12 weeks. Longer stays can be arranged directly with the local team, but will be subject to availability and individual visa conditions.
Spaces on this project are limited and therefore subject to availability. Early booking is recommended.
For current available start dates please check the calendar on the right.
Arrival & Orientation
Upon your arrival into St Georges, you will be collected at the airport and delivered to your accommodation. Here you will receive an orientation to help you settle in, find out about your volunteering placement, the local surroundings and meet your fellow volunteers. A representative from the local team will fill you in on local and regional customs, traveling, rules and recommendations, and of course, what to expect from your volunteering experience. They will also provide you with your Welcome Pack, which contains maps of the local area, supplies, volunteer t-shirt, contact information, and a volunteer manual to help you to be more aware and fully prepared. This is a great opportunity to get to know your hosts, meet your fellow volunteers, and ask any last questions you may have.
- Program Arrival Day: SUNDAYS
- Program Departure Day: SATURDAYS
- Arrival/Departure Airport: Maurice Bishop International Airport, St Georges, Grenada (Code: GND)
Accommodation & Meals
Volunteers on this program will be accommodated with a local Grenadan host family, where they will have the opportunity to become fully immersed in the local culture and custom, improving their knowledge of the people, culture and language. Grenadan families are renowned for their hospitality and love to learn more about different cultures. Living with a local family truly is the best way to throw oneself into the local culture and to meet people who will often become lifelong friends!
All host families have been fully vetted by our local team, receive a detailed orientation and have extensive experience hosting international volunteers. Depending on the time of year it may be necessary to share a room with other volunteers, but private rooms are often available upon request. Volunteers will be provided access to a shared bathroom and laundry. Volunteers are responsible for doing their own laundry (machine wash or hand wash onsite) or can pay a small fee to cover the cost. Wifi is available at most host family houses, however we ask volunteers to remember access to this service is a privilege and may be limited at times. A range of internet cafes are available in St Georges.
Host families will provide breakfast and dinner daily (including weekends). Lunch is not included but can be purchased at a nearby café while at your project site – a wonderful opportunity to check out the huge variety of local and international restaurants, cafés and bistros in St Georges!
