General Impression
Overall Rating:
/ 10I was working with the organization for three months and it was one of the best things I ever experienced in my life. It's great to be with people thinking the same way where the well-being of the kids is in the focus. So if you like to do something for someone else, to work with kids (and also adults!) and to challenge yourself with a different way of living and many different tasks, this is the perfect program for you to work with!
Country
"Honduras is one of the most dangerous countries in the world" - might be true for the big cities like Tegucigalpa, but for El Porvenir I can absolutely not agree with that. For sure, you should not go out alone when it's dark, you should not provoke something with too short clothes or dealing "with the wrong people" , but in the end it is a lovely, chilled and thankful community, wonderful kids and a great possibility to live another life than we are used to it.
Project & Staff
All the directors and managers are very friendly and helpful! It's very familiar and when something is wrong there is always someone you can talk with.
Especially for me (I'm 19 and just graduated from school) it was great to see that they don't really care how old you are or which certificates you have as long as you're doing a great job and prove that you're motivated and comfortable.
For everyone the most important thing is the well-being of the kids and creating a safe place for them where they can be how they really are and do what they really like and this is so precious!

Tips
You should be self-confidence and it will make it much more easier for you if you would have some experience in teaching or how to lead bigger groups. If not that's fine too but you should be open minded to learn new things and to have many different tasks while you are there.
For me it was very frustrating during the first weeks, that I had no possibilities to talk with the kids or creating kind of relation to them because my Spanish was very bad. But after some weeks the basic Spanish and very much of body language was enough to spend a great time with them. But anyway, when you're already able to speak Spanish, you will have it way easier.
And last one: take time to enjoy the carribean lifestyle!
